What did I think?

It has been too long since my last review, but in truth I have not been motivated by any particular comic book published in the last few weeks to see fit to put pen to paper. To be fair there have been a few comic books worthy of comment and The Memory Collectors is a great book that immediately comes to mind. I might perhaps review book two of that series in time to come.

Then issue #2 of Alex and Ada hit shelves last week and I knew that I would want to say a few words about this title. I am thoroughly enjoying the calm and considered pace of this story. We were left at the end of #1 with Alex and his new Tanaka X5 android who Alex names 'Ada' in this most recent issue. Alex is completely uncomfortable with the situation he finds himself in. He craves human interaction in a world that no longer desires it, just not with an android. He is without a partner and not entirely satisfied with being alone. But he now has Ada!

Alex can't bring himself to interact with a robot in the way he would with a human female. What makes this story interesting is that Ada on the outside is as human as human gets. She has the capability to learn from Alex and develop her artificial intelligence in a way to support Alex in his everyday life. Isn't that what we want from a human partner? So then, what's wrong with Ada? Its this simple, Alex can't overcome Ada's true form and that behind any potentially real sentiment expressed by Ada, she is still a robot underneath. Therefore does what she says or does have actual meaning? Good question. One for the reader to solve! This issue forces the reader to question whether it is important for us to truly know people on the inside if their intentions toward us are always going to be good, and ultimately does it really matter? The reader can see that Alex is burdened by this and this influences his feelings toward Ada.

This is one of the more thought provoking comic books I've read in a while and I have enjoyed some of the challenging propositions it puts. As I have stated in previous reviews, this story is not about robots, it about the personal value each of us places on human interaction. Its about how as a society we may learn to one day accept that our friends may one day be robots that are outwardly human in character. I hear you laughing! Just give it time!

Particular care has been taken my Luna and Vaughn to capture and isolate (without distraction) the interaction between Alex and Ada in a way that gives the story real meaning. As a reader you feel Alex's awkwardness and you want him to like Ada, and not treat her like a robot, but like a real person. You are taken on Alex's journey and this is what great story-telling is about.

Ada is wonderful from my own viewpoint. A nurturer, a protector, a companion. However, how do you escape from the mind-set that deep down Ada on the inside is just one hell of a computer. I think its fair to say that I know some people who have a stronger relationship with their iPhone than any other human in their family. So how is Ada any different? Surely Ada is an improvement on that. Why not I say!

The only questions is...how do I order an Ada?

What did I give this issue?

Grade: A

Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn have created a thought-provoking comic book that needs to be read to truly appreciate. This is one series to collect.

Coffin Hill #2 - Review

The Waters and the Wild

In this issue we take a short trip back to explore some of Eve's past. Her friendships, her relationship (of sorts) with Nate who is now the Coffin Hill chief of police. 

Eve was troubled in her youth and still struggles to deal with the fact that she is from a special line of witches dating back to the Salem witch trials. 

Two kids go missing in the Coffin Hill Woods and Eve feels obliged to act. She believes (unlike others) that evil lurks in the Coffin Hill Woods and that this evil traces back to her mother. In this issue Eve makes a discovery that perhaps proves her theory.

Kittredge does well to balance the past and the present when telling this story. Eve's past experiences inform her feelings and actions in the present. Kittredge structures this story brilliantly. You will be able to follow this story easily because of the very well written narrative. Great work by Caitlin Kittredge. As a reader you are given just the right amount of information in this story to remain ever curious about how the bigger picture will unfold. Kittredge draws you into this dark and affluent Coffin Hill society with the promise of mystery and many dark secrets to be revealed. This story totally lives up to my expectations of a quality horror/mystery comic book. 
  
 
A bit about the artist. For the record, Inaki Miranda is an exceptional comic book artist. Before I comment on his work on Coffin Hill #2, I have to compliment Miranda on his amazing work on Fairest (spin off series of Bill Willingham's very successful Fables series). I first saw how brilliant Miranda's work was in an issue of Fairest some months ago, specifically in The Hidden Kingdom story arc. There is a particular piece of art where Rapunzel is walking down a street in Japan that is a must-see. The detail in the line work is exceptional. Go find that issue and own it, now! 

So when I saw that Miranda was drawing the panel art for Coffin Hill I knew it would be a quality series. I think what appeals to me most about Miranda's line work in this issue is his emphasis on the eyes of the characters. The eyes really tell the story visually; they are ever expressive and compliment the facial expressions perfectly. If you have not read this issue yet, consider how the drawing of the eyes of Eve in particular tell her story. Just brilliant. Can't wait to see more.

This is turning out to be one of DC Vertigo's better titles. Go get it and see for yourself.

Alex + Ada #1 - Review

SOME SPOILERS HERE!

So what's it about?

Alex our main character lives in a world where advanced artificial intelligent robots are a part of everyday life for humans. These AI robots are very much like humans. They are manufactured to assist humans and provide company...and maybe genuine friendship? 

Alex has recently parted ways with his girlfriend Claire and is having a bit of a hard time working through his issues. In short he seems depressed. Emily knows Alex is going through a hard time so does something special for him (you can read about that in your own time).

We are introduced to Isabel a friend of Alex's. She will be one to watch I predict!

Alex is close with his grandmother and receives an unexpected gift from her. And that's the beginning of Alex + Ada.

So what did I like about this issue?

Alex's world is high-tech, clinical and lonely. You feel for Alex. You know things in his life could be better. I think Luna and Vaughn succeed in getting the mood perfect for this issue. Luna's thin and detailed line work make this a pleasant comic book to read and ponder. Vaughn's artistic influence is present throughout this issue from the work I have seen. I thoroughly enjoyed those panels where you as the reader are required to study the art work to gauge what the character is feeling without the distraction of unnecessary dialogue or narrative. Alex's party scene comes to mind here. You realise as you read this issue that it is not important what the party guests are saying, just the mood of the party and what that tells you about Alex's life and perhaps the society in which he lives. You are required to apply your own powers of interpretation to the art work which makes this issue a terrific read. It will remind you of the power of comic book illustration as a means to tell a story.

Script quality and artistic expression is everything is this issue and the last few pages will draw you in.

Don't be fooled! This is not some half-baked AI cyborg type comic book where robots are slaves to humans. This is a human story and certainly one of the better releases for this week. I am really keen to see how Alex (and I presume Ada our AI robot) are going interact as this story moves through future issues. I suspect the real trick to this comic book series is going to be reminding yourself that Ada is a robot as she influences Alex's life. A story about robots that may really become a story about humans, about people!

It seems that this is a slower paced and reflective comic book series, and that's what makes it brilliant. Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn have created the an outstanding comic book series worth reading and holding on to.

So what do I give it?

Grade: A

Go get yourself a copy if it hasn't yet sold out and just study the drawings as you move through this issue. You will enjoy every moment.

So what's my favourite cover for this week?

I plan to review Penny For Your Soul: Death #3 in coming days, but I really liked the exclusive cover by Mike Debalfo that I will probably never get my hands on! For those without religious sensibilities...enjoy!

Shahrazad is my new favourite warrior and protector.

Big Dog Ink Comics offered me an exclusive preview of Shahrazad #1 to review prior to it hitting shelves on 27 November 2013...well, maybe one or two days later for us Australian comic book geeks.

Before I share my thoughts....go and order your copy from your comic book retailer now! I'm about to explain why...

The narrative told by Shahrazad herself really draws you into her adventure. As the reader you feel the sincerity behind the her story and you can't help but want to understand more about this character. The way the character has been positioned to engage the reader in this issue is first rate. Great work by writers Kim Hutchison and Kari Castor. Extreme care has been taken to ensure you have time to consider Shahrazad's mood and feeling in each panel of this issue. That is to say the narrative is perfectly paced in order for you to enjoy both the story and the amazing art work (more on that in moment). This is every bit a story of adventure and discovery for you the reader. 

In this first issue, Shahrazad is faced with the perils of the ocean (No Spoilers here!) She must engage in combat with its inhabitants and in the process be drawn to an exotic island where more danger and intrigue awaits her and her fellow sailors. I'd love to tell you more but I won't...I hate spoilers as much as the next comic book geek! But just look at these eyes (pictured below)...amazing...they will draw you in!

This issue combines the old world with the new world in a way that works really well. New world naval ship (and technology) with old world style (uniforms). Shahrazad's uniform has got to be the hottest uniform I've seen on a female navy officer in...well...ever! It compliments the character's beauty and at the same time gives her a sense of authority which she carries with her throughout her travels.

I want this review to focus on the strength of the characters because that is what makes this issue a success. The writers give Shahrazad a command presence as well as a genuine sense of compassion at pivotal times throughout this issue. You can't help but love this character.

The art work by Mike Krome is splendid. Facial expressions suit the circumstances and the drawing of female form is elegant. Colours bring this issue to life with deep blues and greens that add to the intensity of this comic book adventure.

It is quite hard to be critical of this issue. It has everything I would expect from an adventure story. I look forward to seeing how this series develops over coming months.

What do I give this issue?

Grade: A+

Normally at the end of each of my reviews I select a cover that I think represents my favourite for the week. Well, comic book shipments were late this week to Adelaide, Australia, and I was not particularly impressed with anything in particular from this week's new releases, so I have opted for this splash in Shahrazad #1...the mean girls of the water...maybe?

Velvet #1 - Review

My thoughts about Velvet #1

The narrative is beautifully written and the art is elegant. Brubaker and Epting do well to create a sense of mystery and intrigue in this issue right off the bat. We are delivered an action packed spy comic (with a quality storyline) centred around Agent Velvet Templeton who is naturally more than she appears. The story develops throughout this issue at a fast and manageable pace.


Execution of spy stories is only getting harder for writers of these types of comic books. Spy comics are everywhere and have been done time and time again. So why choose this title? Firstly, the cover art is brilliant (pictured above). Secondly, the mood of the issue is sullen and dark and has that unique Brubaker touch (I loved Fatale, even though I read only a few issues). This is a polished comic book that in my opinion will be worth sticking with.

Epting's art work on this issue is precise and sets the perfect mood for a quality spy comic aimed at mature readers. Dark shadows and silhouettes throughout the later part of the book make this issue visually attractive. 

Readers will regard this comic as well thought out and fitting for the period we might find ourselves in today as 'spy comic book readers' in the modern age of comics. Jess Nevins at the conclusion of the issue provides a fascinating history of spy fiction through the Cold War period which perhaps helps provide insight into the direction Brubaker plans to take Velvet as a spy story.

For me, this comic was the stand-out issue for this week. I was not overly impressed with Pretty Deadly #1, and while I really enjoyed Sex Criminals #2 I found it hard to write a review about that issue (just read it and you'll understand why!). Velvet is this week's must read for me! Go get yourself a copy.

So what do I give it?

A well executed and well thought out spy comic in a world full of spy comics. I give this issue top marks.

Grade: A

What was my favourite comic book cover for this week's new releases?

Those who read my reviews tend to know what I look for in a quality comic book cover. I try stay away from Superhero comic book covers (unless its Wonder Woman and something very unique) and look for something interesting, something different, but always a female!

Death Sentence #1 - Review

What is Death Sentence?

The real question is; what is G-Plus?


Titan Comics says...

'It's a fatal virus transmitted through unprotected sexual activity. Infected individuals display extra-normal abilities and their life expectancy is six months from the date the virus becomes productive. There is no cure or effective treatment for G-plus. Individuals can expect to feel energetic and physically well until the final weeks, though depression and or extreme mood swings are not uncommon.'

The above quote is your introduction to Death Sentence #1. In this first issue we are introduce to three characters; Verity, Weasel and Monty. Verity is our standout first character, recently diagnosed with G+, she must deal with the reality that she has only six months to live. Each of these three characters has contracted G+ virus and before they die will gain some extraordinary superhero-like ability which will impact them and the people around them.


What did I like about this issue?

This issue provides some of the most creative, emotive and dark writing I have read in modern age comic books. The main characters of this title are going to be faced with dealing with their mortality in a way that is unique to comic book writing. Why? Well, there is an element of 'realness' to this story. Leaving aside the superpowers concept for the moment, this is a story about 3 people who have to decide what they do with the six months of their life that remains. Now that they know they will die soon, what do they do? Do they make the most of it, or do they do nothing and wait for their inevitable end?

I like that this is a new virus that is poorly understood by its sufferers, the broader population and the medical community. Interestingly, the Government takes an interest in this virus and what it does to its victims. I am certain all these elements are going to make for an explosive story.

As a reader you immediate empathise with Verity who moves through the story with a series of conflicting emotions. The writing is flawless, the monologue reads like poetry and the final quote is just splendid...

'And Life is Colour and Warmth and Light;
And a striving evermore for these;
And he is dead, who will not fight;
And who dies fighting has increase.'

Just brilliant!


The art by Dowling is dark and succeeds in being able to show the range of emotions experienced by all the characters in the story. I found the panels busy, but in a well constructed way. The art work comprised strong dark lines that really suits this type of story. The art and story are extremely well thought out.

The explosive ending to this issue will have you wanting more. I am really looking forward to issue #2 which I understand is due for release in mid-November.

People at Titan Comics...I would love an early preview if you would be so kind!

Grade: A+

A new addition to my reviews...

Wonderland - Through the Looking Glass #1 - Review

What you might need to know before reading this issue...(according to Zenescope)

SPOILER ALERT!!!

After her mother's suicide and the murder of her father at her brother's hand, Calie Liddle sacrificed her brother, Johnny, to the realm of Wonderland. Now Johnny is trapped in the hellish landscape, alone and scared. What will become of him? More importantly, what will become of the Liddle bloodline?

What did I think of this 1st issue of this new series?

This issue definitely fills in some gaps after having read Return to Wonderland and Beyond Wonderland. The story itself feels like Shand and Gregory are really just trying to close the loop left open by previous series. On the whole I found the issue to be average. Nothing inspiring, but worth a read for fans of Wonderland. Maybe for me my interest in this series lies in having some closure with the journey some of the Wonderland characters have taken that have not been explored in detail in previous Wonderland mini-series.


I think that is the point I am trying to get across to readers in this review. To get anything out of this mini-series, you are going to have to be on top of the Return to Wonderland mini-series and the Beyond Wonderland mini-series which are around 5 to 6 years old now. This issue is great for advancing continuity and really explaining the happenings of this amazing Wonderland universe, but will be very unfamiliar ground for new readers. Even old readers should be entitled to be rewarded with some less predictable twists.

Shand and Gregory deal with Johnny's journey to Wonderland well. The Jabberwocky makes his presence known following the events of Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole. The real question for me is this; are we making things a little too complicated now? I fear the answer is yes. Each series needs to be able to stand on its own as an interesting story as well as form part of a greater story. I fear that this series may not be able to stand on its own like previous Wonderland mini-series. Maybe time will prove me wrong, but I just don't think that new readers who pick this issue up are going to want to continue with the series, they may feel as though they have just missed out on too much.

One of the things that always brings me back to Zenescope's titles is that they are supported by great art, both cover art and panel art. Cover art as always is brilliant, my favourite would have to be the Nunes cover (pictured above). The panel art by Miracolo was not to my liking. Facial proportions while unique and distinctive were not of the polished standard I have come to expect from Zenescope. 

My verdict?

A good read for Wonderland fans. New readers will probably not feel inspired enough to pick up issue #2 next month. I will stick with it, but I want to start feeling inspired by this mini-series. I'll let you know how I feel about Wonderland: TTLG next month.

Shahrazad #0 - Review

I am always excited by new comic book titles by Big Dog Ink and to be completely honest I was not sure whether Shahrazad was going to be a title I would be interested enough to follow. I am a Penny for Your Soul reader and for a short time I read BDI's Legend of Oz - The Wicked West series. So I have been unsure about whether I should pick Shahrazad up off the shelves....let's just say that I'm glad I did.



Now I don't normally review an issue #0 of any title. You are really only given a taste of things to come. You are introduced to the main character/s and the basic storyline. All in all, an issue #0 is the hook to get you to reading issue #1 and beyond. I am reviewing Shahrazad #0 because I was absolutely blown away with the potential this title has. With Mike Krome on pencils and the Nei Ruffino on colours readers are blessed with a visual array of concepts and ideas for this title. Clearly the Persian Queen will take us all on many exciting adventures, and if this is the standard of the art work readers will continue to see, well, I plan to be a long-time fan of this title.


Shahrazad is about to tell us the story of her life. She starts this in a narrative sense and this pleasantly persists throughout the issue. Shahrazad will introduce readers to tales of the past, adventures in secluded lands and of modern times. Fantasy and adventure is what we can all expect from this title.


The art work is just amazing. Mike Krome demonstrates his mastery on pencils and readers are shown the beauty of the characters as well as of the tale itself. Krome's smooth and soft lines make this issue a real pleasure to view. His attention to detail is just extraordinary and if Krome continues to be part of this title's creative team you can expect to collect some attractive and extremely well drawn comic books.


There is something special to be said for the genius that is Nei Ruffino's colours in this issue. We see rugged jungle scenes come to life with explosively warm colours and then in the next panel we see cold blue scenes of space and machines of the future. Krome and Ruffino had me studying every panel of this introductory issue and I really felt I was given a great introduction into a great comic book story concept.

So what do I give this issue?

Grade: A

Being an issue #0, readers should still remain cautious, but in the case of Shahrazad, I advise cautious optimism. I am optimistic that this will be a title to collect.

No Tomorrow #2 - Review

I will spend most of this review sharing my thoughts regarding No Tomorrow #2. In truth, picking issue #2 up off the shelf was hard because I was not that impressed with issue #1. With all the great titles available to comic book readers the first issue of any series has to get you hooked straight away. So lets just say I took a chance with this second issue, and my thoughts have changed regarding this title. I will keep reading No Tomorrow because the Goddess of Death seems like such an interesting addition to the Grimm Fairy Tales Universe.

But before I share my thoughts, this week I have also read two other great titles. The first was Sex Criminals #1, which is a great book by Matt Fraction. It is totally out there (no, its not about sex criminals in the way you might think)...pick up the title and you'll see what I mean. I look forward to reviewing a future issue. The second title that I am keen to continue to read is Hit List #1 (Zenescope). Hit List #1 is face paced, action packed and totally engaging. Apart from being a great title, I totally love Jamie Tyndall's cover (pictured). This is another title I will review soon.

Now, No Tomorrow #2...

After setting off a devastating earthquake in Denver, the Goddess of Death turns her attention to the city of Chicago and proceeds to cause an office building to collapse. But her activities are witnessed by everyday family man, Patrick Gale, the lone survivor of the devastating catastrophe.


I really liked the perspective that Gregory provides at the start of the issue. The Goddess of Death takes us through the devastation of The Black Death, the Spanish Flu, the time when the world was set upon by the Smallpox virus. After the earthquake in Chicago, Death takes us to New York City where she has plans for more destruction. But to Death's surprise Patrick can see her present in the natural world. This unsettles the Goddess of Death. Patrick and his family appears to become her target once this is realised. The Goddess has set destructive plans in place in New York City (I won't ruin the end of the issue for you). I am looking forward to what happens in issue #3.

So what did I like about this issue?

I enjoyed the idea that such a powerful Goddess can be seen by a mere mortal. This would be terrifying and confusing at the same time. Patrick sees her destruction and it's all a mystery as to how and why this is all possible. I like the hint the reader is given about the legend of Keres (no spoilers here!). It is this entire story concept that engages the reader throughout this issue. It is what I enjoyed the most about the issue and it is all due to Gregory's skill as a storyteller. I just love the way the Goddess is drawn by Luca Claertti. Claretti shows the reader a visually dark and seductive woman who can appear both gentle and malevolent at times throughout the issue. A great representation of the Goddess of Death.

So what do I give this issue?

Grade: A-

Part of me still reserves judgement about this series. I really like what I am seeing so far, I hope the momentum around the storyline continues to build and the artwork continues to be dark and emotive.

So where are readers at with Wonderland - Down the Rabbit Hole so far...

When Alice realises that her perceived mental illness is truly the evil of Wonderland attempting to hurt her family through her; Alice decides to fight back. However, Wonderland is ready for battle and as Alice takes a bath, a ghastly, faceless girls drags her down into the depths of the water to show her the reality of her family's unavoidable future.

 What can readers expect from this issue?

Readers can look forward to a great sense of continuity coming through in this issue. For those of us that read 'Return to Wonderland' years ago, this prequel series, and in fact this issue, is where you really start to see the stories connect. Wonderland is certainly making its presence known to Alice, but who it is truly after is revealed in this issue (no prizes for guessing who if you have read Return to Wonderland).

The dispute that takes place between Alice and Calie really gives this issue an intensity that makes this issue brilliant. While Alice's family is torn apart by Wonderland, you see why Alice is the way she is in later series. This issue is where readers will see the dots connect which is genuinely rewarding for Wonderland fans.

Also, expect amazing comic book covers. I have featured most of them (including reference to the artists) in this blog entry.

What did I like about this issue?

Jimbo Salgado and Vinicius Andrade Cover
The writing is great and showcases Gregory and Shand's skill in helping long time Wonderland readers engage and stay in-sync with a brilliant story adaptation of Wonderland. For me, the intensity of the writing of the fight between Alice and Calie was what made this issue great. As for the art work, I really found the smooth lines of Alice and Calie visually pleasing. I think many fans will be blown away with the art work on pages 6 and 7 (Wonderland panel). It is very much what Wonderland fans love about the art that has accompanied this whole series, however for me it was pages 4 and 5 which show Calie listening to her iPod unaware that Alice is being dragged into the tormented world of Wonderland. While the art is brilliant, the colours by Francesca Zambon are amazing and flawless. 






What do I give this issue?

Grade: A

This issue for me was all about the amazing art. The visual impact of Wonderland created by Watson and Federici and colours by Zambon makes this issue great.

Wonder Woman #23 - Review

What do I need to know before reading this issue?

The original WW New 52 team of Azzarello and Chiang are back in Wonder Woman #23 to bring you an action packed and thoroughly amazing issue. We left issue #22 knowing that Wonder Woman was going to be going hand-to-hand with the First Born and issue #23 does not disappoint. If you have read previous issues you would understand that the First Born has re-emerged and is pretty keen to avenge the way he has been treated over the years. Of course Wonder Woman, Orion, the God of War, Zola, Hera and Zeke are caught in the middle of the battle to come.

What can I expect from this issue?

A brilliantly written and drawn confrontation between the First Born and Wonder Woman with the God of War on her side.This is an issue that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I was a particular fan of War's little trick to balance the fight between the First Born and Wonder Woman. It was a really surprise to see and rarely am I surprised by what turns up in superhero comic books these days. I think when you have a great writer like Azzarello writing for Wonder Woman, great twists are what you can expect. But more so, I really liked the relationship that was formed between the God of War and Wonder Woman. You can tell they share a deep bond and that really comes out in Chiang's artwork.

What did I like about this issue?

Just about everything. Chiang's art continues to develop WW as a strong yet vulnerable and humane character. Azzarello and Chiang give her a depth not seen in other superheroes. That's probably why this series of WW remains the best of The New 52 releases by DC.

This issue for me is the best in this series so far. I am just so impressed that even after 23 issues, Wonder Woman is still the benchmark in comic book writing for me as has been since Azzarello and Chiang turned this character into something quite wonderful in 2011!

What do I need to know about this title to get started?

Penny For Your Soul - Death #1, is the first issue of volume 3 of the Penny For Your Soul series. In short, hell (yes, the big place downstairs, fire, brimstone etc.) is currently capitalising on the opportunity to steal souls. And what better place to stage this heist than in Babylon (A Las Vegas-like city of sin). Agents of Lucifer lure the weak and vulnerable to enter into contracts to sell their souls in exchange for some cash and the promise of good times (as is the case for Patrick, this issue's first victim). The capturing of souls through a mechanism akin to a market transaction makes this story engaging and interesting.

What can I expect from this issue?

SPOILER ALERT!! - Don't read this if you plan on buying this issue!

A little bit about the quality of the book first. I am always impressed with the exceptional quality of Big Dog Ink's comic books. Readers that purchase BDI's books are rewarded with a high quality book (great paper stock and print quality). I love owning BDI's stuff. They are comic books you want to keep forever.

My favourite of BDI's stories to date is the Penny for Your Soul series. It is fun and perfect for more mature readers, but has a serious sub-text about human actions, consequences and morality generally. You become engaged in an imaginative story to which readers can relate. Of course if you find creative writing about sin, christian religious doctrines about heaven, hell and morality a bit offensive, you might want to steer clear of this title. But if you did steer clear for that reason alone, you would be missing out.

So we start by being introduced to Mary Magdalene who is now in charge of the third circle of hell. She is running the show and wants to do things a little differently. As part of this scene, we are introduced to a woman who is being mistreated (in so far as one could be mistreated in hell, but ignore that paradox for the moment). We may discover her significance in later issues but it might just have been a plot device to introduce us to Magdalene. Either way, it makes for a dramatic and intense opening to this issue. We are later taken to Babylon where Danica begins to discover irregularities between the number of souls that have been purchased through contract and those that are actually reaching hell (call it an accounting irregularity). Through Patrick (a random unsuspecting victim of his own weakness) we discover the cause of the shortfall of souls making it to hell....her name is Eve. I won't say anymore, you must read the first issue of this series. You won't be disappointed.

What did I like about this issue?

The story flowed through this issue perfectly. A real tribute to Hutchison's writing. Readers are given a glimpse of hell as it operates in the context of this story which is important for new readers that might be new to Penny For Your Soul. We are introduced to a new character called Eve and are given a glimpse of what motivates her. Each part of this story is well paced and provides just enough information to keep you wanting more. This is an extremely well written first issue. The art by Neto is dark. Characters are given very heavy shadowing which conveys the darkness that surrounds them. My only criticism would be that I have in the past liked the vibrant colours of the previous series. It would seem that this volume might be taking a different direction, which is okay, I still thought highly of the art in this issue. I love the way Eve has been drawn as well as the colours chosen for this character. She jumps right off the page (well done Oren Kramek on colours).

This is a solid start to a favourite title of mine from Big Dog Ink. If you have enjoyed this title in previous series', you will enjoy this issue too.
